Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

1940 — 2015

Dr. Wayne W. Dyer (1940–2015), affectionately known to millions as the "Father of Motivation," was one of the most beloved and influential teachers in the history of self-development — a man whose journey from a Detroit orphanage to the world's stages embodied every principle he taught. Abandoned by an alcoholic father he never knew and raised partly in foster homes and orphanages, Dyer's defining spiritual moment came in adulthood, standing at that father's grave — where, after years of carrying rage, he chose forgiveness. He often said everything in his life changed from that day. After four years in the U.S. Navy, he earned his doctorate in counseling from Wayne State University and became a professor at St. John's University in New York — until 1976, when he made one of self-help's most legendary leaps: he walked away from tenure and drove across America selling his first book, Your Erroneous Zones, from the back of his station wagon. It became one of the bestselling books of all time.

Across four decades, Dyer wrote more than forty books — twenty-one of them New York Times bestsellers — tracing an arc from practical psychology to profound spirituality. Early classics like Pulling Your Own Strings taught readers to free themselves from self-defeating patterns; his masterworks The Power of Intention, Wishes Fulfilled, and Change Your Thoughts — Change Your Life (his beloved yearlong immersion in the Tao Te Ching) taught them to co-create their lives in alignment with Source. Ten of his books became National Public Television specials, through which his warm, story-rich lectures reached tens of millions of living rooms and raised record sums for public broadcasting. His central teaching never wavered: "Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change" — that we are not human beings having occasional spiritual experiences, but spiritual beings having a human experience.

Dyer spent his final years in Maui, writing, swimming daily, and meeting a public battle with leukemia with the same equanimity he taught, before passing peacefully in August 2015 at seventy-five. His legacy is among the most lovingly tended in the spiritual world: his Hay House family maintains his website, publishes new collections and audio programs from his vast archive, and keeps his lectures, meditations, and film The Shift flowing to new generations. For anyone standing at the edge of a bolder life — hesitating between security and calling, resentment and forgiveness, fear and intention — Wayne Dyer remains what he always was: the encouraging voice saying, don't die with your music still in you.
