Teaches on Esalen Institute

Ulrika Engman grew up in Sweden around horses, boats and ski slopes, and moved to Los Angeles in 1991 to study dance and psychology. That first year in California she took her first yoga class, at Yoga Works, and the practice stayed with her. She trained with Anna Halprin at the Tamalpa Institute, graduating in 1995 in somatic movement and expressive arts, and later certified in Anusara yoga; she now teaches at the E-RYT 500 level.

In 1999 she founded Yoga Journeys, and she still leads six to eight trips a year to places such as Japan, Peru, Egypt, Croatia and the Maldives, planning the routes and teaching every yoga session herself. Her classes are flowing and creative, linking breath and music with imagery from nature and ideas from yoga philosophy, and they draw on her dance background as much as on the mat. Based in the Napa Valley, she teaches at Solage in Calistoga, holds spa yoga days in Northern California, runs a Sunday morning flow class on Zoom and returns to Esalen each spring for a renewal workshop that uses the hot springs as part of the practice.
