Thich Nhat Hanh

1926 — 2022

Thich Nhat Hanh (1926–2022) — known to millions simply as Thầy, "teacher" — was the father of modern mindfulness: the gentle Vietnamese Zen master who taught the world to breathe, and whose century of life wove together contemplative depth and courageous action like no other figure of our age. Born in the ancient imperial capital of Huế, he entered Từ Hiếu Temple as a sixteen-year-old novice in 1942 and received full ordination in 1949. When war engulfed his country, the young monk refused the cloister's safety and the conflict's sides alike: he coined the term "Engaged Buddhism," founded the School of Youth for Social Service — sending thousands of volunteers to rebuild bombed villages and care for orphans — and travelled to the West to plead for peace. It cost him his home: in 1966 South Vietnam barred his return, beginning a thirty-nine-year exile. Martin Luther King Jr., whom he had persuaded to oppose the war, nominated him for the 1967 Nobel Peace Prize, calling him "an apostle of peace and nonviolence."

From exile, Thầy planted seeds that grew into a global forest. In 1982 he founded Plum Village in southwest France, which became the largest Buddhist monastery in the West and the root of an international community now spanning ten monasteries and more than a thousand local mindfulness groups. Through over one hundred books translated into more than forty languages — The Miracle of Mindfulness, Peace Is Every Step, Anger, How to Love — he distilled Zen into practices of luminous simplicity: mindful breathing, walking meditation, deep listening, eating an orange as if it were the whole universe. His signature teaching, "interbeing," named the truth he saw everywhere — that nothing exists separately, that the cloud is in the paper and the sun is in your tea — and his gentle refrains ("Breathing in, I calm my body… Present moment, wonderful moment") became a home for millions who had never entered a temple, while shaping the entire secular mindfulness movement, including Jon Kabat-Zinn, who studied in his tradition.

A severe stroke in 2014 took his speech, and Thầy taught his final lesson wordlessly: in 2018 he returned at last to Từ Hiếu, the temple of his boyhood, closing the circle of exile, and passed away there peacefully in January 2022, at ninety-five, surrounded by his disciples — his ashes shared among his practice centres around the world, his continuation, as he always taught, visible everywhere. It is visible indeed: in Plum Village's thriving monasteries and free meditation app, in the Thich Nhat Hanh Center for Mindfulness in Public Health newly established at Harvard, and in the simple practice he left to anyone in pain: stop, breathe, and come home to the present moment — the only moment, he liked to say, in which life is available to us.
