Sarana Miller

Teaches on Esalen Institute

Sarana Miller has taught yoga for more than twenty years. Her approach rests mainly on the Iyengar tradition, with its care for precise alignment and moving with the breath, and she has also studied with Rodney Yee, Ana Forrest, Sarah Powers and Thomas Fortel, as well as with the kirtan singer Jai Uttal, whose influence shows in the chanting that opens many of her sessions. She has presented at Yoga Journal Live events, and her livestream classes were written up in The New York Times in 2020.

She divides her year between Berkeley, California, and Haines, Alaska, where she lives with her husband, the performer and filmmaker Aaron Davidman. Her weekly classes run online with sliding-scale passes, and her retreats follow the seasons: solstice and equinox weekends at Esalen in Big Sur, regular weekends at Wilbur Hot Springs in northern California, summer retreats in a yurt beside the Chilkat Inlet in Haines, and day-long gatherings at Green Gulch Farm. A typical day moves from chanting, breathing practice and meditation into an active asana session, with restorative poses later on. She welcomes all levels and regularly gives classes to raise money for community causes.
