Teaches on Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health

Sarah Powers is a yoga and meditation teacher who has taught since the mid-1980s and is known for joining yin yoga with Buddhist mindfulness. Her approach, which she calls Insight Yoga, pairs long-held floor postures aimed at the meridians of Chinese medicine with a slower, mindful flow, and sets both alongside seated meditation and reflective inquiry. Her own practice draws on Vipassana, Tantric and Dzogchen Buddhism, studied through extended retreats, as well as Taoist ideas and training in Psychosynthesis and Internal Family Systems. She wrote Insight Yoga, an early and widely read book on yin practice, and later Lit from Within.

With her husband Ty Powers, a Spirit Rock-trained Vipassana teacher, she founded the Insight Yoga Institute in 2010, which offers a 500-hour teacher pathway built from trainings and retreats. The couple lead residential retreats, many held in social silence, at centres such as Mandali in northern Italy and Kripalu in Massachusetts, and teach workshops in Asia and Europe. Sarah also runs a 30-hour online primary-level training that mixes recorded and live sessions, and several of her recorded classes and short courses can be streamed.
