Sage Rountree is a yoga teacher and trainer of yoga teachers based in North Carolina. She holds a doctorate in English literature and came to yoga teaching through coaching endurance athletes, which led her to look at asana through exercise physiology rather than through a list of things that might go wrong. For fifteen years she ran the Carrboro Yoga Company, and she has been on the Kripalu faculty for more than fifteen years, as well as teaching at Wanderlust, Yoga Journal events and the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Most of her work now is with teachers. Her online studio, Comfort Zone Yoga, offers Yoga Alliance-registered 200-hour and 300-hour trainings, continuing-education courses on yin, restorative, yoga nidra, balance and core, a sequencing mentorship and a lesson-planning membership. She builds classes on a simple framework covering the spine's six movements, four lines of the hip and two ways of working the core, and she gives particular weight to the quieter styles: gentle, yin and restorative yoga and nidra. She hosts the Yoga Teacher Confidential podcast and has written thirteen books, among them The Art of Yoga Sequencing and two volumes of Teaching Yoga Beyond the Poses with Alexandra DeSiato.
