Odeya Nini

Teaches on Esalen Institute

Odeya Nini is a vocalist and composer living in Los Angeles. Her path ran from youth theatre through songwriting and jazz improvisation into experimental and chamber composition, and finally into a solo practice built around the unaccompanied voice. She has performed at the LA Phil, the Broad and Merkin Concert Hall, and abroad in Tel Aviv, Australia, Mongolia, Madagascar and Vietnam; her album ODE was picked by The New Yorker among the notable recordings of 2022, and she sings with the new-music ensemble Wild Up.

Alongside performing, she taught yoga for thirteen years and has guided vocal sound meditations since 2012. Her Free the Voice approach asks students to notice how sounding feels in the body rather than judging how they sound, working with breath, toning, improvisation, movement, visualisation and call and response. She teaches it through a 26-lesson online course, group workshops in Los Angeles and New York, private lessons and residential retreats at Esalen. Her Voice Bath meditations layer live vocals with singing bowls, gongs and chimes while listeners lie down and rest.
