Teaches on Insight Meditation Society

Mark Nunberg is a teacher of insight meditation based in Minneapolis, where in 1993 he and Wynn Fricke founded Common Ground Meditation Center; two decades later they added a rural retreat centre in western Wisconsin. He started meditating in 1982 and has taught since 1990. His training mixes Asian and Western teachers in the Burmese Theravada line, and it has included five months as a monk in Burma, four of the three-month retreats at IMS and long periods of personal practice at the Forest Refuge.

Today he shares the guiding-teacher role at Common Ground with Shelly Graf, looks after the retreat centre's programme, and leads a weekly Sunday morning group in person and online as well as a Tuesday evening group on Zoom. He also runs multi-week Buddhist study courses on themes such as craving, impermanence, not-self and mindfulness of breathing, and teaches residential retreats at IMS and elsewhere. His style is steady and close to the early texts, encouraging relaxed, continuous interest in what is happening now, with goodwill and seclusion treated as real supports for freedom.
