Kofi Busia is an Iyengar Yoga teacher who took up yoga while at university in Oxford and has made his living teaching it for more than forty years. From the 1970s into the mid-1980s he travelled often to Pune, India, to study directly with B. K. S. Iyengar at the institute named after his teacher's wife, and he holds a senior certificate in the method. He spent most of his adult life in Oxford, running classes there for many years, before moving to Santa Cruz in California.
Alongside asana he has a long scholarly interest in Sanskrit and Indian philosophy, and his classes often draw on passages from the Yoga Sutras and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika to frame the physical practice. He is working on his own translation of Patañjali's sutras with a commentary, and his website already offers his rendering of the four chapters, recordings of the invocations he chants, and a short life of Patañjali. He also edited Iyengar: The Yoga Master, a collection of essays by students of his teacher. Today he teaches weekly classes at Yoga Center Santa Cruz, several of them also streamed on Zoom, and leads a week-long intensive at Kripalu for students who already have some Iyengar experience.
