Teaches on The Shift Network

Poet, author and teacher Kate Belew brings creative writing together with witchcraft and folk magic. She grew up in Michigan and studied English at Kalamazoo College, then took an MFA in poetry at Sarah Lawrence. Her training in green witchcraft came through a three-year apprenticeship with Robin Rose Bennett; she also studied herbalism at the Chestnut School of Herbs and astrology with Rebecca Gordon, and she is an initiated Green Witch. She lives in Brooklyn.

Since 2017 she has led writing circles and workshops both in person and online. The Bardo, her five-week programme, gathers writers for sessions on ritual, storytelling and channelled and automatic writing. On Substack, her Word Witch newsletter carries weekly essays and seven-line writing prompts, and paying members can join live writing circles. Word Witch (2025), her book, shows how to build a writing practice through simple rituals. With Shelby Bundy of Tamed Wild, where she co-hosted the Magick & Alchemy podcast, she co-wrote Wild Medicine, an illustrated guide to the folklore and magic of more than sixty herbs. Her poems and essays have been published in a range of journals and magazines.
