Jovinna Chan teaches yoga, conscious dance and ritual, weaving them together with time in nature, poetry and sound. She grew up in a Singapore village surrounded by temples and forest, trained as an actor and dancer in New York, where she also earned a black belt in karate, and in 2007 moved into Kripalu as a resident. Over eight years there she studied with its senior teachers, helped run its yoga teacher trainings at both foundation and advanced levels as assistant dean, and qualified to teach the dance forms Soul Motion and Let Your Yoga Dance. Her wider study has drawn on Taoism and Buddhism as well as yoga philosophy.
She co-founded the Pranotthan School of Yoga and the Shakti Initiation Yoga Leadership School, and with her friend Jurian Hughes created the Dance into Joy programme. She describes herself as a devotee on the path of Self-realisation and is most interested in helping householders, women especially, build their own daily practice; her teaching leans on questions and gentle self-observation rather than fixed answers. Today she leads residential workshops at Kripalu and Esalen, has taught at Omega and 1440 Multiversity, and offers one-to-one mentoring for practitioners and for yoga and dance teachers shaping their own programmes.
