Master Alex Dong

Teaches on The Shift Network

Alex Dong is a fourth-generation master of the Dong (Tung) family style of Taijiquan, the lineage founded by his great-grandfather Dong Yingjie. His formal training started at five in Hebei Province under his father, Grand Master Dong Zeng Chen. The family moved to Honolulu when he was twelve, and there his grandfather, Grand Master Dong Hu Ling, became his teacher too. By fifteen he was assisting in his father's classes; he opened his own class in Hawaii in 1990, and in 1991 took the US national title in moving push hands. After moving to New York City in 2003, he founded the Alex Dong International Taijiquan Association.

He teaches the family's slow, fast, Fa-Jing and Kai-He (Hao) forms, push hands, weapons and foundational qigong, as well as shorter Simplified and Advanced forms of his own design. Weekly classes run in New York, with live and recorded lessons online and seminars across the United States, Europe and Asia; his instructional videos are sold through his own site. He also founded an organisation to carry on Tung Ying Jie's legacy, translated much of his great-grandfather's Taijiquan Explained (the Red Book), and, with David Saltman, co-wrote Grand Master, a biography of Dong Yingjie.
