1440 Multiversity

Organisation

1440 Multiversity is a non-profit learning campus in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, just outside Scotts Valley, laid out among tall redwoods on 75 acres that were once the grounds of Bethany University. Joanie and Scott Kriens, whose family foundation carries the same name, created it after several years of grant-making, and it opened in May 2017. The name is the number of minutes in a day: the idea came to Joanie Kriens during a quiet moment in her vegetable garden, and it stands for meeting each day with more attention and gratitude.

Much of the campus's work is hosting groups and organisations for their own gatherings, but 1440 also runs open programmes arranged around five themes it calls Live, Lead, Love, Work and Wonder Well. These include all-inclusive weekends such as its Designing Your Life retreat, a leadership course drawn from Bill George's True North work, evening classes paired with a shared dinner, and cooking classes in its Teaching Kitchen. Every stay comes with short daily classes in yoga, meditation, tai chi, qigong and art, and a free online library holds recorded classes, talks and webinars. Income from bookings helps pay for scholarships and for grants to other non-profits.
